Front and Centered is a Washington-based coalition of left-of-center environmentalist organizations and advocacy groups. It supports a “just transition” from the United States’ economic system, which it calls an “extractive economy,” and claims that system “works to extract resources that are harmful to the climate” and applies “labor through exploitative processes.” 1

It was announced in December 2024 that Front and Centered, along with advocacy group Solid Ground, would receive $3 million in funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to train “15 community leaders” annually to “engage in governmental processes,” and to hold “community assemblies” in order to develop “action plans to inform government decision-making.” 2

Background

Front and Centered is a Washington-based coalition of left-of-center environmentalist organizations and advocacy groups that claim to support a “just transition” from the United States’ economic operating system, which it calls an “extractive economy.” It claims that system “works to extract resources that are harmful to the climate” and applies “labor through exploitative processes.” 3 1

A September 2020 report also claimed that the system is justified by “a worldview that ties into racism, patriarchy, settler/colonialism, and consumerist culture.” The report continues by claiming the “extractive economy” of the United States is a cause of “declining life expectancy,” inequality, racism, and the “rise of authoritarianism.” 1

According to its website, Front and Centered argues its main values include anti-racism, anti-patriarchy, intersectionality, and the “redistribution of power and resources.” The organization further claims its work is based on policy analysis and research, advocacy, and grantmaking. 3

Funding

Front and Centered receives most of its funding from contributions and grants via private grantmaking foundations and government funding. The Biden administration announced in December 2024 that it would provide nearly $1.6 billion in taxpayer funds to organizations across the country that pursue “environmental justice” through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The funding aimed to advance local “projects that reduce pollution, increase community climate resilience, and build community capacity.” 4

Front and Centered, alongside advocacy group Solid Ground, received $3 million in EPA funding to train “15 community leaders” annually to “engage in governmental processes,” and to hold “community assemblies” to develop “action plans to inform government decision-making.” 2 4

Front and Centered received a two-year ALARM (Activating Leadership, Adaptation, Resilience, and Mitigation) Grant worth $150,000 a year from the Seattle Foundation during its 2022 to 2023 funding cycle. 5

The organization also received $130,000 in 2022 from the Emergent Fund, a left-of-center grantmaking organization that was created in 2016 by Women Donors Network and the Solidaire Network. 6 7

The Stolte Family Foundation is a grantmaking organization that funds left-of-center education and environmental policy advocacy. Front and Centered is listed as a grantee partner on the foundation’s website and noted to have been funded since 2018. According to the grantee list, Front and Centered’s current funding from the foundation amounts to $100,000. 8 9

Front and Centered was granted $10,000 a year in both 2023 and 2024 as part of a four-year grant by the Northwest Fund for the Environment in 2023. Front and Centered is also listed as a grantee of the Libra Foundation, a private grantmaking foundation that supports left-of-center advocacy organizations in the United States and around the world. 10 11

Finances

Front and Centered receives most of its revenue from contributions and grants. The organization had just over $1.8 million in revenue in 2021, 98.5 percent of which came from contributions; just over $3.4 million in 2022, 99.2 percent of which came from contributions; and around $2.58 million in 2023, 92.7 percent of which came from contributions. 12

The organization’s expenses amounted to just under $1.7 million in 2021, just under $2.4 million in 2022, and just over $3 million in 2023. Front and Centered had a net asset amount of just under $1.4 million in 2021, $2.4 million in 2022, and just under $2 million in 2023. 12
