Deep Center is a left-of-center activist incubation organization that uses programs and workshops to train young individuals in Savannah, Georgia, to support race-centric social policies and policies that increase dependence on welfare spending.

Introduction

The Deep Center was founded in 2008 as a project intended to address literacy deficiencies in Savannah, Georgia through creative writing workshops. 1 Today, the organization uses workshops to incubate young activists to support race and gender-centric social policies, 2 and utilizes its activist incubation apparatus to advocate and lobby for the positions Deep Center teaches in its workshops. 3

Finances

In 2020 Deep Center received $1,231,953 in contributions, 4 $1,249,096 in total revenue, 5 incurred $1,029,279 in expenses, 6 and possessed $718,641 in net assets. 7

In 2020 Deep Center received a $428,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Education and a three-year $600,00 grant from the left-of-center William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. 8 In addition, many Deep Center publications thank the Vera Institute of Justice for providing funding and support for the publication. 9

Of the contributions received, $117,371 was used to produce and provide lessons, 10 referred to as workshops, that advocated for and taught the need for race and gender-focused policies to students in 61 public high schools. 11 An additional $157,694 was used to provide similar incubation programs for youth in general. 12

National Writing Project

One of the cornerstone projects of Deep Center is its writing project. 13 The writing project claims that it is a venue where young individuals can learn to express the frustrations and challenges they experience through writing; 14 however, the program is designed to nudge young individuals to trace adversity they experience in life to issues of race and gender. 15

The National Writing Project is a program of the Deep Center designed to train individuals who facilitate writing project workshops with young individuals for Deep Center to become more effective at training young activists, 16 particularly individuals from lower-income and middle-class backgrounds, 17 to attribute adversities they experience to issues of race and gender. 18

Policy Advocacy

Deep Center states that its activist incubation efforts support its “policy advocacy wing” 19 and that the stated objective of the various policy efforts that the organization pursues is to oppose “racist systems and narratives” 20 that are allegedly the main barriers to alleviating poverty and “cycles of harm.” 21

Deep Center advocates positions including soft-on-crime policies that limit the ability of judges to require pre-trial bail for individuals arrested for committing crimes 22 and “restorative justice,” 23 an umbrella term used by the Deep Center that seeks a host of welfare spending and decriminalization policies along racial lines, 24 including creating task forces that suggest how government spending should be distributed, 25 more government-subsidized and rent-free housing projects, and additional oversight boards that monitor police activity. 26

Leadership

Louise Tremblay is the interim-executive director of Deep Center. Prior to joining Deep Center Tremblay was the director of youth programming for The ArtsCenter in Carrboro, North Carolina. 27
