Cabin Road Foundation

The Cabin Road Foundation (officially known as “Cabin Road Foundation 04042011” 1 ) is a private foundation located in San Francisco, California, associated with former professional tennis player Anne Matta, formerly known as Anne Grousbeck. The foundation donates to universities, charter schools, criminal justice advocacy groups, and environmentalist advocates.

    In 2021, the Cabin Road Foundation disbursed almost $25 million in grants. Its largest recipient, Stanford University, received $12 million. Alameda Emergency Food received $10 million, the University of California Berkeley Foundation received almost $2 million, the San Francisco Foundation received $1 million, and the Fit Kids Foundation received $20,000. 1

    In 2020, the foundation disbursed almost $56 million in grants. The two largest recipients, each receiving $10 million, were Greenpeace and the Friends of Earl Monroe Charter School. The Sunrise Movement Education Fund, a group that supports the Green New Deal, received $8 million. Other recipients included Media Matters for America, Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, and the Innocence Project. 2

    Leadership

    In the Cabin Road Foundation’s 2022 tax filings, the organization lists two trustees: Anne Matta and her husband, Horacio Matta. Both are former professional tennis players. 1 3

    Anne’s brother, Wyc Grousbeck, is a venture capitalist and the co-owner of the Boston Celtics National Basketball Association team. 4 5 The other co-owner of the Celtics is their father, Irving Grousbeck, the co-founder of Continental Cablevision in 1963. As of January 2024, Forbes estimates the Grousbeck family fortune at $2.2 billion. 6
