American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a nonprofit organization that claims to ” organize the ‘voluntary standards and conformity assessment system’ in the United States by working with the government and private industry.” 1 ANSI does not develop standards itself; it is a “neutral venue” that provides guidelines for the development of standards. 1

    Background

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) was founded in 1918 and claims its standards “impact up to 93% of global trade,” as it argues its activities have increased consumer confidence and efficiency since its founding. 1 As of 2026, it claimed to have 1,400 members, including companies, government bodies, academic bodies, and individuals. 1 It is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and its operations are based in New York City. 1

    Financials

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) reported revenue of $96,347,294 in 2024 and expenses of $96,359,787, for a deficit of about $12,500. 2 Between fiscal years 2024 and 2026, ANSI reported 54 contracts with the federal government and received seven grants with amounts varying from $43,144 to over $10.6 million. 3 The largest grant was described only as “The Standards Alliance: Phase 2 Activity.” 3 The second largest grant’s description was “to support an international standards development process grounded in transparency, private sector leadership and public sector support, and diverse stakeholder engagement.” 3

During that period, about $2.25 million of government funding was awarded to ANSI through the U.S State Department, its largest federal grantor. 3 The second largest, at $2.15 million, was the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), while the Department of Health and Human Services awarded over $800,000. 3
