Background

The Directors Guild of America is a professional association of film and television directors in the United States that aims to promote and protect the interests of directors and the entertainment industry at large. ¹

The DGA was formed out of the merger of the Screen Directors Guild (SDG) and the Radio and Television Directors Guild (RTDG) in 1960. This followed the transformation of the entertainment industry and Hollywood by the emergence of television, which proved highly lucrative. ²

Activities

The Directors Guild of America principally intervenes on legal matters related to crediting and rights. ¹

However, it has also engaged in political messaging on a number of occasions. It operates several subdivisions related to matters of gender identity, racial identity, and environmental sustainability, as well as the broadly left-of-center notion of “social responsibility.” ¹

Its Sustainable Future Committee issues recommendations for reducing the amount of carbon emissions in film and television production “to mitigate the adverse impacts on the environment.” ³

Social Responsibility Task Force

Before his death in 2026, actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner was a member and co-founder of the Directors Guild of America’s Social Responsibility Task Force, a body under the Directors Guild of America that advised films and television on socially acceptable content. Reiner was extensively politically engaged, having campaigned for former Vice President Al Gore’s and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaigns, and having vocally opposed President Donald Trump. ^{4 5}

Financials

In 2024, the Directors Guild of America reported total revenues of $42.4 million, of which $29.7 million came from membership dues. The rest was primarily derived from its awards dinner, its rental income, and its charging of advertising space. ⁶
