Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors is a left-leaning consulting and management company that oversees fiscally sponsored programs of its sister organization, Goodnation, on behalf of Goodnation’s donors. 1 It has managed programs that advocate for transgender issues, technology regulations that would restrict technology use that might be disruptive to the workforce, and for restrictions on the authority of law enforcement. 2 3 4
Background
Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors is the for-profit arm of Goodnation, formally known as The Goodnation Foundation Inc. Goodnation is a charitable nonprofit organization that takes donations to fiscally sponsor left-of-center advocacy groups while Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors provides management and consulting services for the groups on behalf of the donors. 1
Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors was registered as a corporation with the state of New York in July 2018 and lists Goodnation Founder Rob Hansen as its CEO. Its registration reports that it was formed as a foreign corporation, defined as a corporation formed anywhere outside of the state of New York, in April 2018 and operates under Delaware jurisdiction where corporation owner information is not published. 5
According to Goodnation’s tax returns, Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors shares program services performed, membership services, and fundraising solicitation with Goodnation. They also share assets, employees, and reimburse one another for program expenses. As of 2023, Goodnation did not specify on its tax returns how much it paid to Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors for its management and consulting services. 6
Donor Consulting
Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors advises donors on how they can use donor-advised funds (DAFs) to indirectly make philanthropic donations while using the DAF as an intermediary. It advertises its own DAF services as a way for donors to make tax-deductible contributions when convenient and then use Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors to assist in determining how the funds shall be disbursed. 7 8
Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors advertises its philanthropy consulting as being able to advise donors on what they should fund based on their philanthropy goals, recommending specific recipient organizations and advocacy initiatives such as funding race-based, environmental, and statist advocacy. 9
Management of Fiscally Sponsored Programs
In addition to advising donors on grantmaking, Goodnation in collaboration with Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors manages left-of-center advocacy groups on behalf of its donors without the donors having to reveal which specific projects they are funding. Additionally, because the projects are fiscally sponsored by Goodnation, funding of the projects is tax-deductible. Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors is tasked with helping grow, conduct staffing, and advising Goodnation’s fiscally sponsored programs. 2 1
Goodnation Philanthropy Advisors reports having managed programs funded by the Andrus Family Fund, Arnold Ventures, Borealis Philanthropy, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, Democracy Fund, Heising-Simons Foundation, Justice System Partners, the New York Women’s Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and Pinkerton Foundation. 2
