Janet Maughan is a left-of-center advocacy-philanthropic executive currently working as executive director of the Passport Foundation. She previously worked for both the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ford Foundation and is a board member for Earthjustice.

Occupation

Janet Maughan is the executive director of the Passport Foundation, a position she has held since 2008. The Passport Foundation is a nonprofit arm tied to the San Francisco, California-based hedge fund Passport Capital. 1

The Passport Foundation is a liberal grantmaking organization founded by John H. Burbank III and his wife Alison Carlson that focuses on environmental causes and other left-progressive economic and social causes. 2

Maughan also sits on the board of trustees for Earthjustice, a leftwing environmental legal group. 3 A resident of Oakland, Maughan founded Oakland Neighbors Inspiring Trust, an organization working to increase racial understanding. 4

Career

Maughan has done philanthropic work that focused on environmental issues, as well as public health and poverty. 5

Before taking the top spot at the Passport Foundation, Maughan served as the managing director for the Rockefeller Foundation from 2000 through 2008. 6

Maughan worked as a program officer for the Ford Foundation from 1987 through 1994. 7 While at the Ford Foundation, she worked in the Rural Poverty and Resources program. It is in this position where she started the foundation’s environmental and climate work. 8
