Controversies

In August 2025, Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears (R) argued that school districts should end their policy of permitting transgender and nonbinary individuals to use the bathrooms of their choice rather than the bathrooms corresponding to their biological sex. The comment sparked outrage from left-wing groups, including protests at the Arlington School Board organized by We of Action, Equality Arlington, the Arlington Gender Identity Alliance, Arlington Democrats, the Arlington County Democratic Committee, and others.  14 15

According to Democratic political consultant Ben Tribbett and others, while protesting in Arlington, a We of Action-affiliated protester held up a sign reading, “Hey Winsome, if trans can’t share your bathroom then Blacks can’t share my water fountain.” The sign, addressed to Lieutenant Governor Earle-Sears, a Black woman, compared the treatment of Black Americans under segregation to the treatment of transgender and non-binary individuals under her preferred bathroom policy. 14 15

Former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA), whom We of Action endorsed in her campaign for Governor, denounced the sign as “racist and abhorrent.” Representatives from We of Action, Equality Arlington, the Arlington Gender Identity Alliance, Arlington Democrats, the Arlington County Democratic Committee all condemned the sign. We of Action claimed that the individual holding the sign was no longer a member of the group and was never in the group’s leadership. 14 15

We of Action was founded by Micaela Pond, a teacher in the Arlington Public Schools. 16
