Taxpayers Against Genocide (TAG)

Background

Taxpayers Against Genocide was founded in September 2024 when a group of over 1,500 citizens from 18 counties in Northern California opposed a United States House of Representatives vote to appropriate taxpayer funds for the Israeli military. In December 2024, TAG filed a class action lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California against U.S. Representatives Jared Huffman (D-CA) and Mike Thompson (D-CA) who voted in favor of the measure. TAG claimed the representatives were illegally using tax dollars “to fund the genocide in Gaza.” In February 2025, Judge Vince Chhabria dismissed the TAG lawsuit on the grounds that the case presented a “non-justiciable political question” to the court. ²

Since the dismissal of the lawsuit, TAG has partnered with the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) to submit reports to the United Nations accusing the United States government of complicity in genocide. TAG and NLG also filed a complaint against the U.S. with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. TAG has also organized anti-Israel protests across major American cities. ^{2  5}

Activities

In addition to its legal work with the National Lawyers Guild (NLG), Taxpayers Against Genocide (TAG) has organized protests against Israel. In August 2025, Taxpayers Against Genocide was listed among other protest groups as a lead organizer of that summer’s anti-Israel protests across the United States, including a September 4, 2025 protest at Foley Square in New York City. The group partnered with the National Lawyers’ Guild (NLG) to organize the protest. ⁶ Former Green Party Presidential Candidate Jill Stein spoke at the protest. The event also featured a press conference during which TAG and NLG representatives expressed plans to continue their “international legal action they are taking against the US government for participation in the genocide in Gaza.” ⁷

Both the September 4, 2025 protest and TAG as a group have been endorsed by other prominent pro-Palestinian groups, including CODEPINK, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), Sonoma State University chapter, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), the U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), the Alliance for Global Justice (AFGJ), American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), and Within Our Lifetime (WOL). ⁸

TAG also organizes “teach-ins,” virtual webinars discussion topics related to Israel and the Palestinian territories, including TAG’s opposition to Israel and the United States’ 12-day war against Iran in the summer of 2025. ⁹

Association for Investment in Popular Action Committees

The Association for Investment in Popular Action Committees is the fiscal sponsor of Taxpayers Against Genocide (TAG). The group is a nonprofit umbrella organization that financially supports several controversial foreign policy advocacy groups, including many that promote anti-Israel views or support dictatorial Middle East regimes. In addition to TAG, the association has supported or as of 2025 was continuing to support the International Solidarity Movement of Northern California, the Free Gaza Movement, 14 Friends of Palestine, No Tax Dollars to Israel, the Barbara J. Raskin Scholarship Fund, Global March to Jerusalem – North America, the Syria Solidarity Movement (which supported ousted Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad), Palestine Children’s Welfare Fund, the Good Shepherd Collective, the Serena Shim Award, the Resumen Latinoamericano, the NakbaTour, the One State Assembly, and The Grayzone. ¹⁰
