Log Off Movement (stylized as LOG OFF) is a left-of-center technology activist organization that presents itself as a youth technology advocacy organization, but is a registered trade name of the North Fund, a dark money group managed by left-of-center consultancy Arabella Advisors.1 2

Log Off has lobbied in favor of increased regulation for social media and directly supported the passage of the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act (AADC). 3 In 2022, Log Off partnered with Tech(nically) Politics to launch the Design It For Us campaign to advocate in support of the California AADC and other similar legislation. 4

Log Off Movement is a member of the Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund Power Cohort, which supports the critical race theory-influenced concept of equitable technology. 5 In 2023, Log Off received $100,000 from the left-of-center Omidyar Network. 6 Log Off also received $234,500 from Omidyar Network in 2022. 7

History and Leadership

Log Off Movement was founded in June 2020 by Emma Lembke. 8 9

Lembke is also a co-founder of left-of-center technology policy activist group Tech(nically) Politics, and Design It For Us, a coalition formed by Tech(nically) Politics and Log Off to advocate the California Age Appropriate Design Code (AADC). 10 11 12 13 14 Previously, Lembke has called for Congress to regulate technology companies because she believes content online is dangerous. 15 In February 2023, she was invited by U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to testify before the U.S. Senate on the impacts of social media. 16

Celine Bernhardt-Lanie is the leader of the Log Off Movement. She is also the founder of the Wellbeing Initiative. 17

Activities and Funding

Log Off is a left-of-center technology activist organization that presents itself as a youth tech advocacy organization, but is a registered trade name of the North Fund, a dark money group managed by left-of-center consultancy Arabella Advisors. 18 19

Log Off Movement consists of more than 70 teens from 17 countries working to accomplish its policy objectives. 20 21

Log Off Movement claims that smartphone app designs are deliberately made to be addictive for users 22 and supports the development of what it calls a new and “safer” online space for the next generation of Americans. 23 The organization has lobbied in favor of increased regulation for social media and directly supported the passage of the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act (AADC) that requires platforms to take measures to address online risks for minors. 24 In 2022, Log Off partnered with Tech(nically) Politics to launch the Design It For Us campaign to advocate in support of the California AADC. 25

Log Off runs a blog, 26 produces the Log Off and Listen Up podcast, 27 and has formed a teen leadership council to help promote its policy priorities. 28 The organization also hosts a monthly writers group, has convened the Character ED Task Force to develop a school curriculum about how to navigate social media online, and has started a female empowerment initiative. 29 In an appearance on the left-of-center Pod Save America podcast, Log Off Movement founder Emma Lembke said that left-of-center technology policy activist group Tech(nically) Politics is Log Off Movement’s advocacy firm. 30

Log Off Movement is a member of the Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund Power Cohort. This fund supports the critical race theory-influenced concept of equitable technology. 31

Funding

Log Off Movement receives funding from individual contributions and grants. Individual grants to Log Off are routed through Democratic-aligned fundraising platform ActBlue Civics. 32

In 2023, Log Off received a grant from the Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund. Organizations partnering to issue grants from this fund include from the left-of-center Omidyar Fund, Archewell (co-founded by Prince Harry of the United Kingdom and American actress Meghan Markle), Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, Carmel Hill Fund, New Media Ventures, Oak Foundation, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. 33

In 2023, Log Off received $100,000 from the left-of-center Omidyar Network. 34 Log Off also received $234,500 from Omidyar Network in 2022. 35
