Independent Progressive Politics Network (IPPN) was a network of left-of-center organizations that sought the “transformation” of the United States, 1 and coordinated its activities to oppose what it identified as a “corporate-controlled system” in the United States. It appears to be defunct as of April 2023. 2

IPPN’s principles of unity included making fundamental changes to the U.S. political system including public funding of elections, voting rights for immigrants, and proportional representation for legislative bodies; supporting the critical race theory-influenced concept of economic justice; and rapidly phasing out the use of nuclear power plants. 3

The environmentalist Green Party of the United States was an affiliate political party of IPPN. 4 IPPN’s member organizations included the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism, Green Party of Michigan, National Lawyers Guild, Peace and Freedom Party, Project South, Socialist Forum, Socialist Party USA, Tikkun, and others. 5

History and Leadership

Independent Progressive Politics Network was founded in 1995 as a part of the National Independent Politics Summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 6

In 1996, Independent Progressive Politics Network first adopted its principles of unity to govern the organization. These principles included supporting for the critical race theory-influenced concept of economic justice; supporting fundamental changes to the U.S. political system including public funding of elections, voting rights for immigrants, and proportional representation in legislative bodies; ending what IPPN claimed to be deep-seated racism in the criminal justice system; opposing military intervention and what IPPN identifies as “neo colonialism;” rapidly phasing out nuclear power plants and trash incinerators; and others. 7

Ted Glick was IPNN’s national coordinator from 1995 until 2005. 8 George Friday became national coordinator after Glick’s departure and was still listed as IPNN’s coordinator in 2010. 9 10

Former Green Party of the United States presidential candidate and U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) was on IPPN’s national steering committee. Left-wing political activist and author Howard Zinn was on IPPN’s advisory committee. 11

In 2003, IPPN organized a rally as a part of the non-interventionist project United for Peace and Justice. IPPN also helped organize an 80,000-person demonstration in Washington, D.C., in 2002. 20
