For the Many NJ is a left-of-center coalition of over 40 organizations pushing for higher corporate taxes and increased state spending on social services. 1 The coalition’s aggressive stance on tax hikes and government spending has drawn criticism from some who believe such policies could hurt New Jersey’s economy by discouraging investment and job creation. 2
Activities
For the Many NJ supports legislation that mandates at least 72 hours for public and legislative review before the budget is passed. It also advocates greater government investments in healthcare, education, housing, and immigrant services, arguing that these sectors were overlooked during the pandemic. 3
A central issue for the coalition is its push to extend the Corporation Business Tax (CBT) surcharge. For the Many NJ argues that corporations should pay more to support public services. For the Many NJ insists that raising taxes on businesses and the wealthy is essential for funding its proposed public programs, a stance that aligns with its liberal partners. 4
Advocacy
For the Many NJ advocates for expanded tax credits, including increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and child tax credits, to benefit low-income families. It also calls for more government funding for public services like health care, education, housing, and immigrant assistance. 5 The coalition’s push to extend the Corporation Business Tax surcharge has been controversial, with business leaders warning that such tax increases could undermine New Jersey’s economic competitiveness and job creation. 4 6
Affiliations
