Farmed Animal Funders (FAF) is a coalition of 45 wealthy individuals and organizations committed to increasing philanthropic giving to the goals of ending factory farming, to promoting veganism and plant-based diets, and increasing animal welfare. 1 2 3

History and Activities

Farmed Animal Funders is a membership organization of individuals and organizations devoted to ending large-scale animal agriculture, characterized as “factory farming.” FAF was founded in 2017 by a collection of foundations and wealthy individuals and as of 2025 claimed to have 45 members. 2 4

FAF is fiscally sponsored by Humane America Animal Foundation, a nonprofit devoted to animal welfare. 4 5

Those who become members of FAF are required to donate at least $250,000 a year to help achieve Farmed Animal Funders’ objectives. Farmed Animal Funders targets large-scale animal agriculture, which it characterizes as factory farming, because it argues such farming techniques cause animal suffering, produce 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to “the catastrophic risks of continued climate change,” accelerate the transfer of infectious diseases from animals to humans, incentivizes higher meat consumption that allegedly causes cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and cause biodiversity loss and the extinction of species. 2

Farmed Animal Funders claims to account for 75 percent of charitable donations devoted to ending factory farming. 2

FAF promotes education on factory farming, offers customized philanthropic advising to its to increase the effectiveness of charitable giving, and connects members to generate collaborative funding projects. Through these efforts, FAF attempts to end what it calls “extreme confinement” of animals on factory farms, to build public support for an end to factory farming, and to encourage plant-based diets. 3

FAF offers members multiple philanthropic portfolios to which they can donate. These include a climate and food systems portfolio focused on reducing greenhouse gases, a European Union (EU) Policy portfolio focused on promoting animal welfare in Europe, an Aquatic Animal Funding group to coordinate funding to reduce farming of marine animals, and a plant-based EU Policy fund to promote a transition to a plant-based diet in Europe. 6

Membership

Farmed Animal Funders claims to be supported by 45 wealthy individuals and foundations located in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Potential members must submit an application and promise to donate a quarter of a million dollars a year to stop factory farming. 1 4

Members are invited to member-only monthly calls to discuss factory farming issues and research, to a member-only annual retreat, and to a private Slack channel. Members must also pay annual dues of one percent of the total amount they gave to the mission of ending factory farming up to a maximum of $75,000 in annual dues. 7

Members include musician and songwriter Moby, professor emeritus of Princeton University Peter Singer, founder of the India Animal Fund Parag Agrawal, Open Philanthropy, and Stray Dog Institute. 3 2 8

According to Inside Philanthropy, FAF reported a 500 percent increase in funding from its founding to 2025. FAF executive director Shannon Campion reported that increased donor engagement has been most notable among millennials and other younger generations. 8
