Design It For Us is a coalition that was formed in 2022 by activists from the left-of-center technology policy activist groups Log Off and Tech(nically) Politics to support the California Age Appropriate Design Code (AADC). 13 2 The group advocates for curtailing speech online under the pretext of safer social media and online platforms for kids, teens, and young adults. 14
The coalition’s work helped support the passage of the AADC, which regulates the collection, storage, processing, and transfer of children’s data online and is scheduled to go into effect on July 1, 2024. 1 On September 18, 2023, a federal judge granted a request for preliminary injunction from NetChoice, finding it likely that the California AADC likely violates the First Amendment. 15 16 The coalition has supported other similar “online safety” acts and design code bills in Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, and New Mexico. 17

In 2025, Design it For Us’ senior campaign associate, Zamaan Qureshi signed a petition titled “The National Declaration on AI and Kids’ Safety.” The petition highlights documented cases where AI-driven tools such as chatbots and recommendation algorithms, exposed minors to sexually explicit content, psychological manipulation, and harmful advice. It argued that AI products have prioritized engagement and profit over child safety and are deployed without adequate testing or oversight. The petition also called for the implementation of core safety principles such as bans on manipulative AI design, minimal and protected data collection, full parental transparency, and independent safety auditing. It also urges Congress to reform Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act to remove liability shields for AI-generated or algorithmically promoted content. The petition also claimed AI products that pose inherent risks to minors should face product liability and, if necessary, be banned. 22
