China Foundation Center

Background

The China Foundation Center (CFC) is a non-governmental organization based in China that provides a platform to share information on nonprofit groups operating within the country. The group was founded in 2010 through collaboration between 35 private and public foundations. Such foundations included the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and the Jet Li One Foundation. ¹

The group claims to advocate increased transparency of organizations operating within China by disclosing contact info, financial status, programs, management teams, and donors. The organization is operated by the Beijing Jiyue Changqing Social Organization Service Center. ^{2 4 5}

CFC also created the China Fund Transparency Index, while also using both the “Charity Law of the People’s Republic of China” and the “Measures for the Disclosure of Information by Charitable Organizations” to regulate the disclosures by foundations. ⁶

United Nations Partnership

The China Foundation Center partnered with the United Nations Development Programme to launch a report titled “Philanthropy for Sustainable Development in China 2020,” alongside an online “real-time visualization platform.” ³

The report and the platform were created to show the contributions of Chinese foundations towards supporting the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as the potential of Chinese philanthropy in supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,  a set of 17 policy goals that were adopted by United Nations member states in 2015 as a part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. ³

Funding

According to China Development Brief, several major funders of the China Foundation Center include the Gates Foundation, previously known as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. ²

The China Foundation Center is listed as a grantee by both the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. ^{7 8}
