The Blue Wave Postcard Movement is a Colorado-based left-of-center campaign and advocacy organization that works to elect Democratic Party candidates. In addition to electing Democrats, the organization also engages in issue advocacy to encourage politicians to support left-of-center issues.

In addition to writing postcards, the organization joins with other left-of-center organizations to push left-of-center issues. The organization joined with other left-of-center organizations in supporting a federal takeover of election administration in 2021. 1

As of February 2023, the organization claims to have written over 4.3 million postcards and mailed them out to swing districts across the country. In addition to issue-related and get-out-the-vote postcards, the organization also encouraged Democrats to vote by mail in states where vote-by-mail is available. 2

Background

The Blue Wave Postcard Movement is a Colorado-based organization that writes postcards and mails them across the country to encourage its recipients to vote for Democratic Party candidates and push for left-of-center policies. 3

The organization had its beginnings in April 2019 when a group of local activists gathered in a brewery and began writing postcards to inform local voters of a recall attempt that was launched against a Democratic legislator. The postcard efforts eventually had to be moved out of the brewery and to a grocery store cafe because the writers kept bringing their friends. Ultimately, they were able to defeat the recall attempts. 4

After the defeat of the recalls, the postcard writers then switched to congressional and gubernatorial races across the country. 5

Activities

By early 2020, the organization was inviting speakers to speak at its meetings and was still recruiting more postcard writers. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the organization switched to virtual meetings and still featured Democratic Party-aligned speakers. 6

In 2020, the organization was officially organized so that it could fundraise and provide resources to activists who needed financial help. The organization also began to design and print its own postcards in order to have more control over its message. In addition, by ordering postcards in bulk it could save money and pass the savings down to its activists. 7

In the 2020 and 2022 elections, the organization targeted swing states and other swing congressional and state legislative districts. By the end of the 2022 elections, the organization had written over 4.3 million postcards. 8

Issue Stances

In November 2021, the organization signed onto an open letter released by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund that called on the U.S. Senate to support a federal takeover of election administration. 9

In September 2022, the organization singed onto a statement released by Demand Justice that supported a Supreme Court ethics bill that possibly violates the Constitution’s separation of powers. 10

Leadership

The founder and head of the organization is Ning Mosberger-Tang. Tang formerly worked for Google an engineer. Since 2006, she has worked on various left-of-center activist projects with an emphasis on environmentalist and nonprofit work. 11
