United Women of Color (UWOC) is a left-of-center get-out-the-vote and organizing organization that seeks to mobilize ethnic-minority women and increase their influence in the government decision-making process. 1 2

UWOC supports the far-left Black Lives Matter movement, 3 the critical race theory-influenced concept of social justice, 4 left-of-center anti-gun organization Moms Demand Action, 5 and the left-wing concept of community policing as an alternative to traditional law enforcement approaches. 6

UWOC has received fiscal support from the controversial Southern Poverty Law Center. 7 In August 2023, UWOC called Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D-GA), U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith, and Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, Jr. (D-NY) “defenders of democracy” for their efforts to prosecute former President Donald Trump. 8

History and Leadership

United Women of Color (UWOC) was founded in 2018. 9 The organization was also granted tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service in 2018. 10

Angela Curry is the founder and executive director of UWOC. In October 2023, she was scheduled to speak at an event organized by the pro-abortion advocacy organization Yellowhammer Fund that calls for “Black Autonomy” in the American South. 11

Curry has claimed that North America has been protecting white supremacy since the 1600s 12 and that there has been “state sanctioned thievery” against African Americans in the United States. 13

UWOC began as an organization conducting voting surveys at local events in Huntsville, Alabama. As of September 2023, the organization is active across Alabama and focuses its efforts on changing the criminal justice system and conducting get-out-the-vote (GOTV) efforts and other organizing activities. UWOC has more than 100 contributing members and 220 volunteers that are supported by grants from the controversial Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and left-of-center Alabama Forward. 21

UWOC runs the Vote Gone Viral GOTV campaign to increase civic participation of its members 23 24 through programs such as letter-writing campaigns and broader organizing activities. 25 As of September 2023, UWOC is looking to expand its operations to college campuses. In 2021, UWOC co-sponsored an event with the far-left Black Lives Matter movement in support of changes to law enforcement and policing. 30 Prior to the 2020 general election, UWOC claimed that African Americans were the number one target of Russian campaigns to win the 2016 presidential election for Donald Trump. 31

In October 2020, UWOC said it liked the policies of former Democratic Party of South Carolina chair Jaime Harrison during his unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Senate. 32
