Unite and Renew Fund is a left-leaning grantmaking and advocacy organization that supports the efforts of its sister charitable organization, the Unite and Renew Educational Foundation. 1

Unite and Renew Fund supports the institution of ranked-choice voting (RCV) and nonpartisan primaries to “weaken the grip” of what it calls extremists on primary elections. The fund has supported state constitutional amendments to end closed primaries and institute ranked-choice voting for Congressional elections. It has also supported state constitutional amendments to change how Congressional districts are drawn. 2

Unite and Renew Fund supports left-of-center organizations including American Democracy Project, New Politics, United to Protect Democracy, Represent.US, and the Voting Rights Lab. 3 In 2020, Unite and Renew Fund gave left-of-center Alaskans for Better Elections (ABE) $300,000 for operating expenses. It also gave Fair Maps Virginia $150,000 for operating expenses. 4

History and Leadership

Unite and Renew Fund was founded in 2019 by Harrison Miller. 5 The organization received tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service in 2020. 6

As of September 2023, Harrison Miller is the president of the Unite and Renew Fund. 7 Prior to founding Unite and Renew in 2019, Miller worked in various roles at venture firm Summit Partners and technology firm Amazon. 8

Activities and Funding

Unite and Renew Fund is a left-leaning grantmaking and advocacy organization that supports the tax-deductible efforts of its sister organization, the Unite and Renew Educational Foundation. All donations to the Unite and Renew Fund support its grantee organizations and the Unite and Renew Educational Foundation. 9

Since its launch, Unite and Renew Fund has supported a state constitutional amendment to end closed party primaries and establish ranked choice voting for Congressional elections. It has also supported state constitutional amendments to change how Congressional districts are drawn, lobbied dozens of states on election administration practices, run a civics education program for more than 2 million students in 42 states, and recruited military veterans and retired national service workers to run for political office. 10

Unite and Renew Fund claims to have members from the political left, right, and middle and is guided by its support for American democracy, supremacy of the U.S. Constitution in all policy discussion, equality of all Americans, rejection of postmodernism, a duty to support democratic and free market systems, and a commitment to address issues with realism instead of cynicism. 11

Grantmaking

Unite and Renew Fund claims that the current state of politics rewards politicians for loyalty to extremists, punishes political cooperation, and is driving American decline. 12 The fund issues grants to make changes in the current political system and engages in public policy and issue advocacy in support of structural changes to the American democratic system in support of these goals. 13

Unite and Renew Fund fiscally supports various left-of-center organizations including American Democracy Project, Fair Maps Virginia, New Politics, United to Protect Democracy, Represent.US, and the Voting Rights Lab. 14
