Background

The organization was formed in 2003 by Denise Washington and reported tutoring 20 low-income students at Bret Harte Middle School on its 2014 tax return. The same filing claimed that the tutored students’ “grades increased by 1 grade level.” ³

The organization is not affiliated with any of several other organizations throughout the United States that use the “Save Our Schools” name such as the left-of-center Save Our Schools New Jersey and Save Our Schools Arizona, or the right-of-center Save Our Schools project operated by Heritage Action for America. ^{4 5 6}
