Realizing Sexual and Reproductive Justice (RESURJ) is a left-of-center coalition of feminist groups and activists under the age of 40 in the Global South and Asia.

Since 2017, RESURJ has been fiscally sponsored by the Praxis Project. 1 Previously, the organization had been fiscally sponsored by Just Associates. 2

History

RESURJ was formed in 2010 “out of a realization that feminist organizing within advocacy spaces was largely shaped and dominated by white, often older feminists from the global north.” 3 Early organizers were members of various groups dedicated to abortion access and female reproductive health. 4 The following year, RESURJ hosted its first major event with the International Women’s Health Coalition and Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era. In 2012, RESURJ and the two groups claimed credit for the United Nations Commission on Population and Development passing a “groundbreaking” resolution to call upon governments to include feminist and equity goals in their economic development plans. 5 6

Activities

RESURJ supports the development of feminist organizations throughout the world. RESURJ’s Mutual Aid Fund provides financial support to allied organizations; in 2021, the fund supported 10 groups. 7

RESURJ hosts and attends conferences throughout the world and online, including the Feminist Community of Care, the Global South Women’s Forum, and the Commission on the Status of Women. RESURJ attended COP26 where it protested for more action against climate change. 8

RESURJ and the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights have partnered for a campaign to encourage pro-abortion legislation in Egypt, where abortion is currently prohibited except when the mother’s life is in danger. 9

RESURJ partnered with Vecinas Feministas por la Justicia Sexual y Reproductiva en America Latina to take a survey of laws enacted to combat the COVID-19 pandemic that allegedly discriminate against women. 10

In June 2021, RESURJ co-created “An Affirmation on Feminist Principles” regarding transgender rights. The statement asserts that, “we must combat and dismantle the patriarchal systems of power” and that transgender rights are a valid component of feminist struggles for liberation. 11 12

In 2019, RESURJ, Vecinas Feministas, and Balance AC launched Injusta Justicia to critique the criminalization of adolescent and feminine sexuality in Latin America. 13 14

Leadership

Sachini Perera has been the executive coordinator of RESURJ since November 2021. Previously, Perera co-founded and ran Delete Nothing, “a feminist tech initiative to document the incidence of online gender-based violence” in Sri Lanka. Earlier, Perera was a program officer for International Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific, the Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women, and the Women and Media Collective. 15 Perera is co-chair of the steering group of the Alliance for Feminist Movements, and is an advisor for the Nebula Fund, the Women’s Fund Asia, and W7. 16

Marisa Viana was the executive coordinator of RESURJ from 2015 to 2022 and was a secretariat member from 2014 to 2015. Earlier, Viana was a program manager of the Young Feminist Activism Initiative at the Association for Women’s Rights in Development, an external evaluation consultant at the United Nations Association International Services, and a program associate at the International Women’s Health Coalition. 17 She is also a member of Vecinas Feministas. 18

Funding

In 2021, RESURJ generated $723,562 in revenue, $703,000 of which came from private foundations, including the Ford Foundation, the Channel Foundation, the Global Fund for Women, the Open Society Foundation, the Wellspring Philanthropic Fund, and The Praxis Project. 19

In 2015, RESURJ received $250,000 from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. 20

Other donors include American Jewish World Service, Accountability International, and the Kendeda Fund. 21
