This amount came from Bill Gates as part of a $12.5 billion agreement tied to Melinda French Gates’s exit from the Gates Foundation. An identical amount came from Gates to the Pivotal Philanthropies Momentum Foundation and the Pivotal Philanthropies Opportunity Foundation. Melinda French Gates has been the director of Pivotal Philanthropies Pathways Foundation since its inception, with no reported compensation in 2024. French Gates, a longtime advocate for left-of-center causes, previously co-chaired the Gates Foundation and founded Pivotal Ventures in 2015 to focus on women’s issues. ¹⁰

All five foundations in the Pivotal network share the same street address and list Melinda French Gates as director, John Sage as president/treasurer, and Brooke Anderson as vice president/secretary. Anderson is Pivotal’s president, while Sage is a longtime advisor to French Gates.
