The Pivotal Philanthropies Opportunity Foundation, formerly the Greenfinch Foundation, is a left-of-center private foundation associated with Pivotal Ventures, the umbrella entity for the philanthropic and advocacy activities of Melinda French Gates, which also include the Pivotal Philanthropies Momentum Foundation and the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation. The foundation was one of several entities created to receive funds from Bill Gates as part of the couple’s 2021 divorce settlement and Melinda French Gates’s 2024 departure from the Gates Foundation. It aligns with Pivotal’s and French Gates’s broader left-of-center priorities, including expanding women’s political representation, advocating for government-funded caregiving policies, and supporting women’s health initiatives that encompass abortion. 1 2 3
Background
The Pivotal Philanthropies Opportunity Foundation was established in 2023 and received tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in December of that year. It initially operated under the name Greenfinch Foundation before adopting the Pivotal Philanthropies Opportunity Foundation name. The Opportunity Foundation shares an address and leadership with other Pivotal entities and was created as part of Melinda French Gates‘s expansion of her independent philanthropic network following her divorce from Bill Gates. The Opportunity Foundation, the related Pivotal Philanthropies Pathways Foundation, and the Pivotal Philanthropies Momentum Foundation were formed as branches of the larger Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation. All were initially all named after birds before being rebranded in 2024. 1 4
The foundation reported no grantmaking in its first year of substantial operations and held assets derived almost entirely from a single large contribution from Bill Gates. It operates alongside similar Pivotal-affiliated foundations that channel funds toward left-of-center causes, such as increasing the number of women in elected office and promoting policies like paid family leave. 3
Activities
The Pivotal Philanthropies Opportunity Foundation reported no independent activities, grantmaking, or programs in 2024. Its operations appear to be tied to the broader Pivotal network, which pursued left-of-center initiatives such as training women for political office and funding organizations advocating for left-leaning election reforms. For instance, Pivotal supported groups that aimed to increase the representation of left-of-center women and racial minority women in government, including efforts to recruit and train candidates for down-ballot races. 5
The network also funded campaigns for policy changes such as expanded paid family and medical leave, framing such measures as essential to addressing gender inequities. In addition, Pivotal collaborated on global women’s health efforts, including a $250 million grant program that funded organizations addressing mental and physical health issues, with an emphasis on underserved populations. While Momentum itself did not participate in these grants, its funds position it to support similar activities in the future. 6 4
Funding
Pivotal Philanthropies Opportunity Foundation received $982,228,982 in contributions in 2024, accounting for virtually all of its revenue. This sum came from Bill Gates as part of a $12.5 billion agreement tied to Melinda French Gates‘s exit from the Gates Foundation. An identical sum came from Gates to the Pivotal Philanthropies Momentum Foundation. Similar transfers were made to other Pivotal-affiliated foundations, totaling over $10.8 billion across the network. 3 4 7 8
Leadership
Melinda French Gates has been the director of the Pivotal Philanthropies Opportunity Foundation since its formation, with no reported compensation in 2024. French Gates, a longtime advocate for left-of-center causes, previously co-chaired the Gates Foundation and founded Pivotal Ventures in 2015 to focus on women’s issues. 9
All five foundations in the Pivotal network share the same street address and list Melinda French Gates as director, John Sage as president/treasurer, and Brooke Anderson as vice president/secretary. Anderson is Pivotal’s president while Sage is a longtime advisor to French Gates. The same three individuals are also listed among the five officers/directors of the 501(c)(4) Pivotal Initiatives Fund. 4
Related Organizations
The Pivotal Philanthropies Opportunity Foundation operates as part of the Pivotal network, which includes Pivotal Ventures LLC, the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, the Pivotal Philanthropies Momentum Foundation, the Pivotal Philanthropies Pathways Foundation, and the Firefinch Foundation. All share leadership and address left-of-center priorities such as women’s health (including abortion access) and political representation. 5
