The group, which is based in Dallas, Texas, has been active within the broader Black Lives Matter movement and has held several events in honor of George Floyd and other individuals who died in police custody. Specific financial details regarding the organization are unknown, and the group has not filed a tax return since 2020; however, a new organization with a nearly identical name was granted tax-exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in 2025. The organization gained additional notoriety in 2025 for its role in raising money for and acting as a spokesman for Karmelo Anthony, a 17-year-old who allegedly fatally stabbed another teen at a track meet. 3 4

    Background and Activities

Next Generation Action Network was formed in 2014 by Dominique Alexander, who uses the title “minister” without noting a specific church or religious affiliation. The group has been active within the Black Lives Matter movement since its founding, and became more active in 2020 following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The group’s legal advocacy fund reports working with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Civil Rights Corps, and Dallas-based organizations. 5 3

In 2021, the group announced an annual “George Floyd Week” to commemorate Floyd’s death in police custody. 6

NGAN’s policy priorities include “dismantl[ing] the Prison Industrial Complex,” ending cash bail, and implementing community-based policing strategies. 7

    Financials

Little is available about the Next Generation Action Network’s finances; as of 2025, the organization’s most recent tax filing was for the year 2020, which saw the group raise over $170,000 in revenue with $161,000 in expenses. Dominique Alexander, the group’s CEO, reportedly only earned $17,000 in compensation from the organization in 2020. 8

ProPublica, which operates a database of nonprofit organizations, noted that the group is not listed in the IRS’s most recent list of tax-exempt organizations as of May 2025. However, in March 2025, a separate organization with a nearly identical name, Next Generation Action Network Foundation of Texas, was granted tax-exempt status under the employer identification number 33-3451736; financial information for that organization was not publicly available as of mid-2025. 9 10 Dominique Alexander is listed as the new organization’s “care of” address in its March 2025 charitable status determination letter from the IRS. 11

    Leadership

Dominique Alexander is the founder and, as of 2025, was the president and CEO of the Next Generation Action Network. Alexander has a history of arrests, the most recent of which as of mid-2025 was his arrest on domestic abuse charges in 2019. In 2011, he was convicted of a felony for causing serious bodily injury to a child when he allegedly shook a two-year-old causing head trauma, and in 2016 was convicted of a probation violation. 12 3

    Karmelo Anthony Case

The Next Generation Action Network gained notoriety in 2025 when founder and president of the group Dominique Alexander was appointed the family spokesperson for Karmelo Anthony, a 17-year-old student from Frisco, Texas accused of fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a confrontation at a track meet. The group has raised funds for Anthony’s defense and publicized its efforts to provide aid to Anthony, who was released on bond after his bail amount was substantially reduced. 4
