    Background

Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force was established in 1987 by Judy Treichel, Abby Johnson, and Frank Clements to provide public information and encourage citizens’ involvement in the federal nuclear waste program in Nevada. 2

The nonprofit opposes the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA) of 1982 which authorizes the use of the Yucca Mountain in Nevada as a nuclear waste storage and disposal site. 1

Caroline Petti, a retired Environmental Protection Agency lobbyist, 3 played a key role in the formation of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force by leading its parent organization, the National Nuclear Waste Task Force, and being one the prime coordinators of the anti-Yucca Mountain campaign. 4

    Staff

Judy Treichel assumed the role of executive director of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force in 1986. 5

    Advocacy Efforts

In December 2021, the Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force was one of more than 100 groups that co-signed an open letter opposing the nuclear power production tax credits offered in H.R. 5376, the House of Representatives proposal for the Build Back Better Act. 6

The groups identified nuclear power as one of several “unproven and unnecessary technologies” and “harmful energy sources” that “would extend demand for fossil fuels.” 6

Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force opposed testing atomic weapons and disposing of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, arguing that the site cannot isolate highly radioactive waste and that Nevadans did not consent to its use for this purpose. 7

    Financials

The financial records of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force indicate that in 2023, the nonprofit reported revenue of $95,000 and expenses totaling $70,941. 8
