Mary J. Hutchins Foundation is a left-of-center private grantmaking group.     Background and Activism

    The Mary J. Hutchins Foundation was founded in 1935. 2 It ostensibly focused on supporting organizations that worked with low-income people. 2

    Planned Parenthood

    The Mary J. Hutchins Foundation supported the abortion provider 3 Planned Parenthood of New York City which merged with four other New York state Planned Parenthood affiliates to become Planned Parenthood of Greater New York 4 The group gave Planned Parenthood of New York City $40,000 to support the merger in 2020 5 and gave the group $140,000 in 2021. 1

    “Antiracist” Training

    The Mary J. Hutchins Foundation supported Community Resource Exchange (CRE) which provided management and leadership training. CRE adopted the radical-left identity-politics framework of “antiracism” 6 and featured a guide for white leaders that asked them to do “deep, honest, and ongoing inventories (and clean-up) of their own relationship to white supremacy.” 7 Mary J. Hutchins Foundation gave CRE $55,000 in 2021. 8

    Immigration

    The Mary J. Hutchins Foundation supported several groups who advocate for liberal expansionist immigration policy. It gave $80,000 to the Brooklyn Community Foundation in 2021 to support its immigrant rights fund. 1

    It supported Advocates for Children of New York 9 which attacked New York City for limiting migrant stays in city shelters for 60 days. It called the decision destabilizing for students, families, and schools. 10

    It also supported the left-of-center group New York Immigration Coalition, giving it $55,000 in 2021. 1

    Transgender Youth

    The Mary J. Hutchins Foundation supported the Partnership for Afterschool Education. 11

    In April 2017, Partnership for Afterschool Education posted an article linking to a white paper pushing for more integration of LGBT identities in schools. 12

    In October 2018, Partnership for Afterschool Education posted an announcement by the Center for Anti-Violence Education that offered a pre-teen self-defense course for girls, gender non-conforming youth, and transgender children between the ages of 9 and 12. 13 .

    In October 2023, it hosted an in-person college counseling session for transgender and gender non-conforming youth. 14

    Advocacy Institute

    The Mary J. Hutchins Foundation supported the Advocacy Institute with a $20,000 donation in 2021. 8 The Advocacy Institute trained left-of-center groups and activists in how to campaign and lobby New York state and local governments. 15

    Criminal Justice

    The Mary J. Hutchins Foundation supported Avenues for Justice with a $40,000 donation in 2021. 8 Avenues For Justice worked to keep young people out of jail by providing court advocacy, short-term assistance, and employment programs. 16

    It also supported Youth Justice Network with a $35,000 grant in 2021. 1 It also provides alternatives to incarceration for young people. 17
