LookUp consists of a teen leadership team that works with staff on programming, including LookUp’s Innovative Challenge that creates programs and messaging on technology and mental health, and an alumni grant for participants of the Innovative Challenge that remain active and are sustaining results. 3
LookUp works with other organizations on mental health issues, encouraging kids to be more active and use technology less, seeking more transparency on data collection from technology companies, and entertainment producers that lean left-of-center to deliver similar technology messages. 4
LookUp was founded in 2019 by Susan Reynolds and her mother Ann Reynolds as an organization focused on young people to support a more inclusive, healthier, and responsive digital world. 1 At inception, LookUp created impact partnerships with BlackRock, Center for Humane Technology’s “The Social Dilemma,” and public relations firm Porter Novelli. 5
LookUp seeks to create a tech life balance that limits technology’s role in young people and promote more interpersonal relationships. 1 LookUp is a strong proponent of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and seeks to actively undue any harms in the digital society. 2 LookUp promotes a youth-centered approach to improving mental health by limiting screen time through events, panels, podcasts, resources, and challenges to improve mental health and online experiences. 6
LookUp partners with organizations deemed inclusive, healthier, and responsible in the digital world. 4 LookUp’s partners include Half the Story Project, which advocates that less technology can promote better mental health; I Can Help, a group that prevents cyberbullying; Share? and Accountable Tech, which both focus on technology companies collecting personal data; Do Curious and Youth Power Fund, which both advocate for kids to leave their screens and interact; Active Minds, John W. Brick Mental Health Foundation, Mind Out Loud, and the Digital Wellness Institute, all promoting mental health; Catalyst Youth Center, an Oakland, California-based organization providing tutoring services and mentoring programs; Exposure Labs, a media company producing films on global warming and the control of technology on kids; Eating Disorders Coalition; Live More Screenless; and Screen Time Action Network, and organization promoting reducing screen time. 4
LookUp runs a yearly Innovative Challenge that is a remote cohort program for youth advocates, storytellers, and innovators to create campaigns and design solutions on improving mental health through digital technology and youth-led movements. 3 Grants are awarded for winning designing solutions including programs, projects, and podcasts. 7
Alumni of the Innovative Challenge that have been committed to their work since participation in the Innovative Challenge may apply for an Alumni Impact Grant. 8 Applicants must be currently active with LookUp and have work to show, be sponsored by a nonprofit or LLC, have stats on the impact of previous work, and do work that cannot be considered app development. 8 Awards are made up to $5,000 in funding along with support. 8
To engage younger people and develop ideas, in addition to staff, LookUp has younger leadership teams consisting of a Teen Leadership Council. 9 Previously, LookUp hosted the online Youth for Youth Summit that brought together younger people to discuss connecting and creating healthier digital spaces to bring change. 10
In 2022, LookUp had net assets of $192,500. 11 In 2022, LookUp recorded $316,600 in revenue and had $238,500 in expenses. 11 In 2021, LookUp raised $360,200 in revenue and had $260,600 in expenses. 12
Susan Reynolds is the co-founder and has been chairman of the board of LookUp since its creation in 2019. 13 From 2018 until 2021, Reynolds was co-founder and director of youth advocacy at the Digital Wellness Collective (now the Digital Wellness Institute). 14 In 2017, Reynolds co-founded Mindhood, a grassroots effort promoting students to move away from a technology-addicted culture. In 2007, she founded ABC Legacy to prepare teens for a technological world. 15 Reynolds spent 17 years at the Fenn School in Concord, Massachusetts as the social studies chair and director of academic technology. 16
