History and Activities
The Legal Accountability Center is a left-of-center advocacy group that that files legal action against individuals and other organizations that it claims are engaged in “disinformation campaigns” or whom it cliams “violate professional conduct rules.” It also claims to take action against supposed “Anti-Democratic Organizations.” 1 4
The Legal Accountability Network focuses on five activities. The first is to undermine what it considers as networks of disinformation through defamation litigation. The second is to file bar complaints against attorneys who take positions it disagrees with through the 65 Project, a campaign supported by Law Works that began by targeting lawyers who aided President Donald Trump’s efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 election. As of September 2025, the Legal Accountability network claimed to have filed nearly 100 complaints to pressure lawyers.
The third is to “impose costs” on individuals, institutions, and groups that either advance Trump administration policies or that fail to challenge Trump administration policies. The fourth is to target nonprofit organizations that it asserts do not deserve tax-exempt status by virtue of engaging in partisan activities. The fifth is to create a cycle of legal consequences to enforce alignment within the legal world to the Legal Accountability Network’s political framework.
In July 2025, the Legal Accountability Center filed a complaint with the grievance committees of bar associations in Washington, D.C., and other jurisdictions, accusing three lawyers in the Trump administration Department of Justice (DOJ) of making false statements to a federal judge in a case over the Trump administration’s attempts to alter the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The complaints alleged that DOJ lawyers lied about the intention of the administration to shut down the CFPB. 2
In September 2025, the Legal Accountability Center filed a bar complaint against Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, alleging that he has conflicts of interest relating to the Jeffrey Epstein files. 4
In at least one case, the Legal Accountability Center was represented in its complaints by Emery Celli Brinckerhoff Abady Ward & Maazel LLP. 5
The Legal Accountability Center was previously linked to the Democracy Fund, according to a story by the Washington Examiner. However, according to the story, as of September 2025 the web page allegedly showing that connection was taken down. 6
