The Lawrence P. Castellani Family Foundation is a grant-making foundation obtaining tax exempt status in 1995. 2 The Castellani Family Foundation was founded and is run by Lawrence P. Castellani, his wife, son, and daughter. 3 The largest portion of grant recipients of the Castellani Family Foundation are in the health and education fields. 4

Grants

In 2016, the Castellani Family Foundation made a $1 million donation to the University of Buffalo (UB) to be split between the school of law and school of medicine. 5 Lawrence Castellani had previously sat as the chair of the UB Foundation and on the UB Council. 6 Castellani’s daughter attended the University of Buffalo school of law and Castellani’s younger brother was a graduate from the school of medicine. 7 The Castellani Family Foundation previously made an additional donation toward construction of a new building for medical school. 8

The Castellani Family Foundation is ranked ninth in the country for nonprofit foundations giving to community foundations. 9 In 2021, the Castelli Family Foundation’s largest grant of $100,000 went to the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives (NCIA.) 10

Health

From 2019 through 2021, the Lawrence P. Castallani Family Foundation provided grants to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Roswell Park Comprehensive Care Center, Golfology for Cardiology, Next Step Fitness, Hospice Foundation of Buffalo, Hackers for Hope, Niagara Hospice, Pathways for the Visually Impaired, Chron’s and Colitis Foundation, Olmsted Center for Sight, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, University of Kansas Health System, and Children’s Tumor Foundation. 11

Education

Since 2019, the Castallani Family Foundation made grants to Colgate University, Hamilton College, the University of Buffalo Foundation, Skidmore College, Canisius High School, Horizons at New Canaan Country School, St. Joseph Collegiate Institute, Woodway Scholarship Fund, Cristo Rey Network, Nardin Academy, and Bison Children’s Scholars. 12

Arts

Grants were made from 2019 through 2021 to the Florida Studio Theatre, Van Wezel Foundation, Sarasota Art Museum, Sarasota Orchestra, and the Asolo Repertory Theatre. 13

From 2019 until 2021, the Castellani Family Foundation provided funding to the Cato Institute, Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center, Darien Foundation, Darien Police Association, Darien Firefighters Foundation, All Faiths Food Bank, 716 Squash, All Star Children’s Foundation, Roswell Park Alliance, American Jewish Committee, St. Thomas More Catholic Church, and Coastal Conservation. 14

Lawrence P. Castellani

Lawrence P. Castellani was president and CEO of Tops Friendly Markets, a grocery store chain, from 1991 through 1997. 18 From 1997 through 1998 Castellani was executive vice president of Ahold USA, another supermarket chain, after it acquired Tops Friendly. 19 Castellani was president and CEO of Ahold Support Services in Latin America from 1998 through 2000. 20 From 2000 through 2005, Castellani was the CEO of Advance Auto Parts. 21 Since his retirement in 2005, Castellani has been a consultant to Freeman Spagoli, a management investment firm. 22 Castellani has made numerous political donations since 1993, almost exclusively to Republican candidates. 23
