KC Mothers in Charge was created in 2014 by Rosilyn Temple after her son, Antonio “Pee Wee” Thompson, was murdered in 2011. The organization provides community response initiatives and support for individuals and families “navigating the aftermath of homicide.” 1 KC Mothers in Charge is one of about a dozen chapters of the Mothers in Charge organization nationwide. 2
History
KC Mothers in Charge was founded in 2013 by Rosilyn Temple. Temple formed the Kansas City chapter of Mothers in Charge after learning about the organization following the murder of her son, Antonio “Pee Wee” Thompson, in 2011. KC Mothers in Charge was originally formed as a part of Kansas City’s Ad Hoc Group Against Crime program. Later, the organization expanded its services and moved into its own office space after receiving funding from the Kansas City Police Department. 3
About
The Kansas City Police Department notifies KC Mothers in Charge when a homicide occurs so that the organization can offer crisis intervention and support to the victim’s family members. 4 The organization responded to over 80 homicides in 2023 5 and more than 90 homicides in 2022. 6
KC Mothers in Charge also provides a Hope and Healing Support Program that supports families of homicide victims by conducting home visits, check-in phone calls, therapy sessions, support groups, as well as assistance with funerals and vigils. 4 The organization also runs the Survivors Will Heal Support Program. Created in 2021, the Survivors Will Heal Support Program provides support groups and counseling opportunities to non-fatal shooting victims to help them move forward after experiencing a crisis. 4
KC Mothers in Charge also hosts “Pee Wee’s Walk,” an annual walk named after Rosilyn Temple’s son, to honor the lives of those lost to violence. 7

In 2023, KC Mothers in Charge reported total revenue of just over $405,000, expenses of about $410,000, and net assets of about $300,000. 8 Sponsors in 2023 included Garmin International, the Reach Healthcare Foundation, and United Way of Greater Kansas City. 5
