Intervale Center
The Intervale Center is a left-of-center Vermont-based environmental and agricultural nonprofit that works to preserve farmland and support local agriculture. Much of the organization’s work responds to its stance that climate change is causing unpredictable weather, lower crop yields, and human migration. Intervale Center implements climate-mitigation strategies that focus on social, economic, and environmental justice. 1 2

The Intervale Center claims that the Vermont Native Americans and the land where the Intervale Center is now located were mistreated by white settlers and that their “capitalism and white supremacy legacies” are still prevalent today. 3
Activities
The Intervale Center has over 360 acres with portions of the land leased to seven medium-sized farms. 4
In August 2025, a deceased body was found in the Winooski River around the Intervale Center and was later identified as a transient. The Intervale Center property has been used as a homeless encampment, 5 6 and in February 2025, a fire broke out at the encampment that investigators said was intentionally set. 7
The New Farms for New Americans program run by the Association of Africans Living in Vermont (AALV) uses five acres of land within the Intervale Center and five acres within the Winooski Valley Park District. AALV then leases that land to refugee farmers to grow “culturally familiar crops.” 8

In 2023, Intervale Center reported $3,655,375 in total revenue, approximately 12 percent of which ($427,388) was from government grants. 9
In May 2025, it was announced that the Intervale Center was one of ten organizations to receive a portion of a $1.7 million grant from the One Hive Foundation to expand pollinator habitat and native plant development. 10

In 2023, the Intervale Center was granted $486,250 and an additional $40,000 for Vermont Way Foods from the Vermont Community Foundation, 19 Vermont’s largest grantmaking organization. 20
In 2022, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) signed a cooperative agreement with Vermont under the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA). Under this agreement, The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets (VAAFM) issued a grant of $72,000 21 to the Intervale Center in 2022 and another grant of $45,000 in 2023. 22
The Intervale Center has received grants from Patagonia Org, the philanthropic arm of the apparel company Patagonia that supports left-leaning advocacy projects and organizations, including $20,000 in 2023, 23 $15,000 in 2022, 24 $20,000 in 2020, 25 $18,000 in 2019, 26 $20,000 in 2018, 27 $26,000 in 2017, 28 and $5,000 in 2016. 29
In 2021, the Claneil Foundation, an environmentalist grantmaking organization, granted the Intervale Center $150,000 over three years and an additional $10,000 for professional development and wellness. 30
