The Fertig Freedom Foundation is a private grantmaking foundation based in Pasadena, California. The Foundation is a smaller donor to left-progressive organizations with a regional focus on California. 1

Founder

David Fertig is the president of the Fertig Foundation, as well as a left-of-center activist, attorney, and musician. His father, Ralph Fertig, was an activist during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and later became an attorney. David’s upbringing immersed him in activism, politics, and organizing opened doors for him in various left-of-center organizations. He attended the self-consciously left-wing Peoples College of Law from 1982 to 1986, served on its board from 1983 to 1998, and has been a faculty member there for several years. David worked with Pacifica Foundation as both a board member and as an attorney for the board from 2001 to 2004 to save it from a board that was straying from its left-progressive mission. He has since tried to use his musical background to help increase political awareness and activism. 3

Financials

According to the Fertig Freedom Foundation’s 2017 tax returns, the foundation had assets of $362,884 and made donations of $30,000. 4

The Foundation’s donations included $1,000 to the Liberty Hill Foundation and $3,000 to the Los Angeles Community Action Network. 5
