Colaborativa La Milpa is an organization composed of several member organizations that combined in 2018 to conduct Hispanic advocacy and community programming in Asheville, North Carolina. Member organizations include an immigration advocacy organization, an afterschool cultural programming organization, and an organization providing childcare. 1
Member Organizations
Colaborativa La Milpa is a collection of five member organizations: PODER Emma, Compañeros Inmigrantes de las Montañas en Acción, Raíces Emma, Mä hñäkihu, and El Telar. 2
PODER Emma is an organization conducting community organizing to prevent individuals from being displaced from their homes. 3
Founded in 2002, Compañeros Inmigrantes de las Montañas en Acción is an immigrant advocacy organization based in western North Carolina. 4 The organization encourages people to “know your rights” 5 and provides pamphlets online outlining how to respond in scenarios, such as “What to Do if Immigration (Ice) Shows Up at Your Workplace.” 6
Raíces Emma is an organization that offers after school and summer cultural programming for Latino families in the Erwin School District. 7
Founded in 2018, Mä hñäkihu is an organization working to preserve the culture and language of the Hñähñú community, a native Mexican culture. 8 The organization hosts a “Celebrating our Cultures Festival” that highlights the Hñähñú language by demonstrating casual conversational skills. 9
El Telar is an organization that provides childcare and education for children. 10
Finances
The organization’s tax returns for 2022 reported revenue exceeding $1.9 million, expenses of more than $1.6 million, and total assets of over $2.1 million. 11
In 2021, Colaborativa La Milpa reported total revenue of just over $2 million, expenses of about $1.1 million, and net assets of about $1.7 million. 12 Colaborativa La Milpa was awarded $40,000 in 2021 from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. The funds were awarded to provide “direct cash assistance for basic needs to Latino immigrants in Buncombe County who do not qualify for federal aid and are experiencing hardship due to COVID-19.” 13
Leadership
Geny Hernandez Lopez is Colaborativa La Milpa’s director of organizational development and popular education, and Angeli Sosa is the organization’s operations and finance manager. 14
