Background

The Baum Family Foundation, previously known as the George K. Baum Family Foundation, is a private family foundation founded in 2013 and located in Kansas City, Missouri. It was initially registered as the George K. Baum Family Foundation and its registered agent was G. Kenneth Baum. 1 2

Baum graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and joined his father’s municipal bond financing firm George K. Baum & Company. He eventually took over the firm from his father. In 1994, he sold the business to his son Jonathan, and he and his wife Ann founded the Baum Family Foundation in 2013. Baum was a founding member of the board of trustees for the Kansas Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Baum died in November 2021 at age 91. 5

In 2022, after Baum’s death, the Jonathan E. Baum became foundation president. 6 In 2023, its annual registration report showed Sarah Baum as the foundation president. 7 In October 2023, the foundation name was changed to The Baum Family Foundation. 8

Funding and Grants

In 2023 the Baum Family Foundation reported revenues of $477,325 and expenses of $1,470,848. Its net assets were valued at over $29.5 million. 3

As of its 2023 tax return, the Baum Family Foundation awarded a total of $1.27 million in grants. 9 It awarded $200,000 to tech education group WeCode KC, $128,000 to the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, and $125,000 to the Urban League of Greater Kansas City, alongside many other grants to groups such as El Centro, the Trevor Project, and Be Great Together.10

Leadership

According to its 2023 tax return, Sarah Baum is listed the foundation’s president. She is the late G. Kenneth Baum’s daughter-in-law and wife of Jonathan Baum. Ann Kaufmann Baum, the late G. Kenneth Baum’s wife, is its vice president. Jonathan Baum is its treasurer. 11

Jonathan Baum is the late G. Kenneth Baum’s son. He earned a master’s in finance from the University of Chicago. He was the CEO of George K. Baum & Company from 1994 until 2019, when it was sold. At that time, he focused on his role as a partner in private equity investment firm Baum Capital Partners. 12 13
