El Centro, Inc. is a nonprofit organization focused on advocacy and service for Hispanic people in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties, Kansas through educational, social, and economic programs. El Centro began as El Centro de Servicios para Hispanos with a $10,000 grant from the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas and support from the Cordi Marian Sisters and other Roman Catholic leaders to organize and serve the growing Hispanic community in Kansas City. 1 El Centro works with other left-of-center groups in the Kansas City area to promote left-of-center policies. 2

In 2023, El Centro reported $4,783,319 in revenues and $3,516,223 in expenses with $14,650,781 in total assets and 48 employees. 3 In the same fiscal year, El Centro received $35,000 in government grants. 4 In fiscal years 2022 and 2023, total revenues for El Centro rose over five percent. 3
In 2023, Health Forward Foundation (also known as the Healthcare Foundation of Greater KC) awarded two separate grants to El Centro for $400,000 and $200,000. 5 6
Community Catalyst has awarded grants to El Centro since 2019, contributing $182,500 to the organization in 2023. 7 8
Programs and Advocacy
El Centro operates a dual-language preschool program, and a Kindergarten-through-6th grade summer school program. 9 El Centro offers economic empowerment services to low-income families in the Kansas City area, including financial literacy education, money management counseling, and tax assistance. 10 El Centro’s health-related services include support for uninsured individuals, community health education, and health-related policy advocacy. 11 During the COVID-19 pandemic, El Centro promoted testing and vaccines. 12
El Centro offers DACA (Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals) clinics, as part of its larger efforts on immigration, which also include opposition to the Trump administration’s deportation policies. 13 14 DACA Clinics include advising illegal immigrants not to open their doors for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers without a warrant, not to answer questions, and to record interactions with officers. 15 El Centro also offers naturalization assistance. 16
