Ayuda, which translates to “aid” in Spanish, is a education nonprofit providing legal and language services to low-income and immigrant communities in Washington D.C, Virginia; and Maryland. The group began in 1973 to provide legal services to immigrants, tracing its roots back to Ayuda Para El Consumidor, a George Washington Law School clinic formed in the 1960s that assisted immigrants with legal issues related to consumer fraud. 1
Programs
Ayuda provides legal services, social services, and language services to low-income and migrant communities. According to the group’s website, Ayuda claims to help “immigrants from anywhere in the world” by providing “access the social safety net” in order to “navigate the immigration and justice systems” of the United States. 1
Ayuda offers immigration legal services, but also focuses on domestic violence issues. 2 Immigration-related issues that Ayuda works on include helping illegal immigrants fight deportation orders, issues related to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protected Status, naturalization of U.S. citizenship, asylum applications, and family-based immigration applications. 3

People
Paula Fitzgerald is the executive director of Ayuda. Before her work at Ayuda, Fitzgerald was a staff attorney at the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington and an associate at Hunton & Williams law offices working on issues related to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. 4
