1Hood Power is a left-of-center advocacy organization based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that endorses political candidates who support the interests of left-of-center Black people. 1 2 It endorses candidates who support left-of-center polices and publishes resources to increase voter participation. 3 4 5
1Hood Power published a blog post condemning Jeff Yass, whom the group labeled the richest man in Pennsylvania, for using his wealth to donate to right-of-center political campaigns and advocacy organizations. It criticized Yass for supporting private-school choice programs, lowering the corporate tax rate, restricting abortion access, and for opposing environmentalist efforts. 6
Background
1Hood Power is a left-of-center advocacy organization based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 7 It is the advocacy arm of 1Hood Media, a Pittsburgh-based media organization that hosts musical artists who promote left-wing political advocacy. 8 9 1Hood Media publishes a This Week in White Supremacy podcast that hosts guests from the hip-hop music industry to discuss political advocacy and white supremacy. 10
1Hood Power organizes voter mobilization campaigns in Pennsylvania. It advocates for reducing incarceration rates and socialized housing, and the group condemns private ownership of housing. It also advocates for the use of weather-dependent energy sources. 1
1Hood Power promotes the use of what it describes as a “culturally competent curriculum” in public schools to reduce disparities in education outcomes among races. It also promotes taking measures to make advancing through school easier as well as ending the detention and reducing the deportation of illegal immigrants. 1
Endorsements
1Hood Power contacts Pennsylvania political candidates and questions them on their positions on criminal justice, housing, immigration, environmentalism, and election integrity to create scorecards, judging them on how they believe their positions would affect Black people and the working class based on left-wing ideology. 11
During the 2024 election, 1Hood Power published its endorsements for the Pennsylvania primary, stating the recommendations were made based on its staff and partner organizations. 3 After concerns over its endorsement process, 1Hood Power announced it will publish its candidate questionnaire during the 2024 election cycle. As of April 2024, 1Hood has published forms requesting public feedback but has not published what questions were used to make its recommendations or scorecards for the 2024 election. 4
During the 2022 elections, 1Hood Power campaigned in support of U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) during the Senate runoff. It claims that its support for Warnock was based on its belief that ethnic minorities are subjected to “over-policing” and voter discrimination. 1Hood Power also states that it endorsed Warnock due to his support for public funding of healthcare for pregnant women and veterans as well as increasing agriculture and infrastructure funding. 2
Advocacy
1Hood Power advocates for eliminating election integrity policies like voter identification, claiming dropping requirements is necessary to prevent voter disenfranchisement. It advocates for mail-in voting, increasing unstaffed drop box locations, early voting, absentee voting, and automatic voter registration policies. 12
Financials
In 2022, 1Hood Power reported receiving $253,742 in contributions, according to its tax returns. 13 It also reported spending $253,601, including $127,147 on salaries and compensation of employees. 14
