History and Leadership

The Springer Nature Group was created in May 2015 after the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Union approved the merger of the Nature Publishing Group, the majority of Macmillan Science and Education, and Springer Science+Business Media. 11 12

Springer Nature is controlled by the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, a German publisher that holds a 53 percent share of Springer Nature. Headquartered in Berlin, Germany, 13 Springer Nature is one of the largest publishers of research and education content. 14 The publisher’s U.S. offices are located in New York, New York; Jersey City, New Jersey; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Washington, D.C. 15 16

The Holtzbrinck Publishing Group has stated that it values the critical race theory-influenced concept of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and has committed to the left-wing concepts of equity and inclusion in its publications and within its media group. Holtzbrinck Publishing Group has stated that its companies, including Springer Nature, Macmillan, and Pan Macmillan, promote equal opportunity and inclusion. 17 It has also said that the far-left concepts of unconscious bias, diversity, and inclusion are “integral parts” of its leadership training. 18 British company BC Partners holds a 47 percent share of Springer Nature. 19

Frank Vrancken Peeters has been the CEO of Springer Nature since September 2019. 20
