Left Field is a left-of-center activist group located in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and active across New England. It is not an independent legal entity but rather associated with larger left-of-center organizations like Swing Left and Field Team 6 that provide technological resources that facilitate get-out-the-vote efforts and other activities. ^{1 2 3}

Founding and History

Left Field was founded in 2021 as a local Swing Left group in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Swing Left is a “Carey committee” that organizes and provides resources and technological platforms to local activist groups. During the 2022 campaign season the group worked to canvas, phone bank, and send out postcards and election mailings in support of left-of-center candidates in New England. ^{4 5}

According to the group’s profile on Swing Left, the group has 236 members, has sponsored 12 events, has organized 312 volunteer shifts, and has written 24,920 letters. ⁶

Swing Left

Swing Left is a Carey committee hybrid PAC that works to facilitate left-of-center activist groups in activist and get-out-the-vote efforts by providing technological platforms and other tools for organizing. The organizers and leaders of member groups can access and manage the group via Group Builder, manage events via Mobilize America, and facilitate fundraising for Swing Left or other organizations. According to Left Field’s profile with the group, it was focused on races in New Hampshire during the 2022 election season. ^{7 8}

Field Team 6

Left Field is associated with the left-of-center activist group Field Team 6. Field Team 6 is focused on nine states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. However, Left Field was listed as working in Vermont and is therefore considered a non-target state partner which means that the partner organization has to raise a minimum of $500 to purchase data from data vendors regarding likely unregistered Democrats in the group’s operating area. With this information, Field Team 6 will then provide free digital programs that facilitate phone banking, social media management, and manual text banking. For $2,500 the organization will provide access to Spoke text banking software. Partners in target states are not required to raise the $500 to purchase data on likely unregistered Democrats. ^{9 10 11}

Rural Freedom Network

Left Field raised money for the left-of-center PAC Rural Freedom Network through ActBlue to fund a media campaign in the 2022 election. ¹²

Policies and Projects

Left Field states that its policy priorities revolve around healthcare, abortion access, and the environment, specifically climate change. It advocates for some kind of universal state provision of healthcare. Its out-of-date write-up on abortion stated that Roe v. Wade might be overturned in the future by the judiciary and therefore there is a need for activism on the state level. The organization blamed climate change for COVID-19 and what it characterizes as extreme weather events. ¹³
