Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign began when then-Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) announced her candidacy for U.S. president on January 20, 2007. Clinton was defeated by rival Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), who became the Democratic Party’s 2008 presidential nominee; Clinton suspended her campaign on June 7, 2008. She was later appointed Obama’s Secretary of State.
