Background and Activities
The United States Professional Association for Transgender Health (USPATH) is the United States affiliate of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), a medical advocacy group made up of doctors who seek to standardize medical practices concerning treatments for gender dysphoria. USPATH operates under the umbrella of WPATH and provides a forum for professionals practicing transgender-related medicine in the U.S. to share research, clinical experience, and practices. Professionals in the U.S. who are WPATH members are automatically members of USPATH. 1 2
USPATH was launched in 2017 with an inaugural conference, sponsored in association with WPATH, held in February which focused on health care practices that “affirm” transgender individuals’ desired sex. Since 2017, USPATH has continued to host conferences and symposiums that support such medical practices. A symposium held in 2025 included discussions on land acknowledgment, policies that affect transgender health, and sessions on issues such as LGBT curricula “through an intersectional lens.” Other sessions held were on “the future of gender-affirming medical education,” “building a gender affirming care model in the emergency Department,” reproductive care for those who identify as non-binary, exercises for “vocal feminization,” health equity, “fostering gender literacy and centering trans joy in young children,” and promoting the participation of transgender people in athletics. 3 4
In May 2025, USPATH criticized a report released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) report that called for the use of psychotherapy for the treatment of gender dysphoria instead of using puberty-blocking cross-sex hormones. 5 6
