Background
Tulalip Tribes Charitable fund is the philanthropic arm of Tulalip Tribes, a federally recognized Native American tribal coalition based in Puget Sound, a body of water north of Seattle, Washington. The tribes reside on the Tulalip Reservation, encompassing roughly 22,000 acres of marine waters, tidelands, creeks, forests, and other natural resource-rich lands. Tulalip is the successor to a collection of several smaller tribes that were all granted the land under the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855. 4 5
The Charitable Fund, also known as Tulalip Cares, aims to give grants to organizations in the Puget Sound region “that contribute to our communities.” Grants are approved by the Tulalip Tribes Board of Directors to “help improve arts and culture, education and youth, social services, public services and the environment.” 6
Activities
Every year, Tulalip Tribes hosts an event called “Raising Hands.” The event takes the form of an awards show to recognize charitable groups that have made an impact according to its key categories. It follows from a tradition in the tribes of raising hands as a symbolic show of thanks for those that have done positive work. 7
