Tangerine Entertainment is a film production company that claims to work “exclusively with female identifying film directors.” The group’s goals include building a community to support female-led films to address perceived gender disparities in the industry. 1 2
Tangerine Entertainment offered the “Juice Award,” which consisted of a $1,000 prize to first- and second-time female film directors. The Juice Award was first given in 2013, and Tangerine Entertainment lists a total of 16 recipients. However, it appears that the last year the award was presented was 2016, and the donation portal appears to no longer operate as of 2026. 3
Background
Tangerine Entertainment is a film production company that is focused on promoting mid-cost-level films that are made by female filmmakers and have female lead characters. According to the company, it “has a clear and specific agenda aimed at increasing the presence of smart, complex women both behind and in front of the camera.” 2
The group seeks to build a fan-base for such films through its campaigns, while at the same time producing work for that audience. Tangerine Entertainment claims that it is particularly focused on character-driven films. 2
The group seeks to carve out a community of female film directors, as well as providing funding opportunities to first- and second-time film directors, claiming that it is seeking to address an “imbalance created by the lack of gender parity” in the film industry. 2
Activities
Some of the films that Tangerine Entertainment has produced include Paint It Black, directed by Amber Tamblyn and Keep The Change, Lucky Them, and The Last Laugh by Ferne Pearlstein. 1
Keep the Change, a 2017 film directed by Rachel Israel, was in part a partnership between Tangerine Entertainment and New York Women in Film and Television (NYWIFT), a charitable and advocacy nonprofit, according to the platform Seed & Spark, which claimed all donations to the film’s production would be tax-deductible via NYWIFT. The film, which in part was an exploration of autism, cast actors who were on the autism spectrum, and raised $53,000 for its production budget. 4 5
Tangerine Entertainment also presented the “Juice Award,” which consisted of a $1,000 prize to first- and second-time female film directors, and was to be presented at film festivals of Tangerine Entertainment’s choosing. The group described the award as “a crowd sourced grassroots initiative,” and stated that contributing to it was tax-deductible. Winning the award included a five-hour consultation with Tangerine Entertainment’s team. The Juice Award began in 2013, and Tangerine Entertainment lists a total of 16 female film directors who have won it; however, it appears that the last year the award was presented was 2016, and the donation portal appears to be no longer operational as of 2026. 3
