Students of Color In Academic Life (S.O.C.I.A.L.) is a left-of-center activist group in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is a partner of Midcoast MKE, a Milwaukee-based record label that donates its proceeds to “anti-capitalist” activist groups. ¹

Background

S.O.C.I.A.L. is not a formally incorporated nonprofit organization. It is a project hosted on a handful of social media sites including Linktree, which acts as its home website. ²  According to its LinkedIn page, it was formed in 2017, stands for “Social Justice and Equity,” and its location is listed as the Milwaukee Turners athletic club Turner Hall. ³

Activities

S.O.C.I.A.L. claims to create community initiatives, tutoring and mentoring services, and professional development opportunities to local teenagers and young adults in the interest of “empower[ing] and unit[ing] our communities.” It holds supply drives and volunteers in local community events. ⁴ On its Instagram page, the group uploads posts advertising events it is participating in and sharing graphics about “Black Healing” and “Native American Heritage Month.” ⁵
