Stop the Coup 2025 is a coalition of left-leaning and LGBT-interests activists opposing Project 2025, which is a conservative governing agenda plan for the next Republican president that involves replacing large numbers  of government employees. 1

Organizations involved in the Stop the Coup 2025 coalition include the Center for Popular Democracy, Human Rights Campaign, CPD Action, Vocal New York, and Rise and Resist. 2 The group’s website says it “operates under the fiscal umbrella of a nonprofit, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) agency,” but does not identify what the nonprofit is. 3

In early 2024, the organization held a protest rally in front of the Washington, D.C.-based Heritage Foundation, the leading organization behind Project 2025. 4

Background

Stop the Coup 2025 describes itself as a group of LGBTQ+ activists opposing Project 2025, a coalition of conservative groups, led by the Heritage Foundation, that developed a governing agenda and field of personnel candidates for a future conservative president’s administration. 5

Stop the Coup 2025 claims its “goal is to increase the attention mainstream media pays to Project 2025’s goal of dismantling our US system of government, reinforcing white supremacy, erasing the LGBTQ community, women’s rights, labor, immigration, and other rights, and urge Americans to sound the alarm and vote against this dangerous GOP platform in November.” 6

Stop the Coup 2025 claims the Project 2025 plan is an “extremist electoral playbook for a soft coup,” and would be “a step toward autocracy, and Christian theocracy.” 7

Stop the Coup 2025 has a statement of principles to nonviolence that says, “Nonviolence is a tactic in the service of the democratic values we hold. Its methods are steadfast refusal to accept state violence, and the pressure of collective action.” 8

An Instagram post from a Stop the Coup 2025 organizer says: “Our message: No Day One Dictator! Stop Project 2025!” 9

Leadership

Anne-Christine d’Adesky is the leader of Stop the Coup 2025. She has been part of activist groups such as ACT UP and Lesbian Avengers. 10

Jay W. Walker is an organizer with Stop the Coup 2015. Walker is a New York “anti-fascist” organizer who has been active with the groups Rise and Resist and Gays Against Guns. 11

Launch

The first gathering of the Stop the Coup 2025 movement was in December 2023 at the LGBT Center in Manhattan, for a town hall with 75 in attendance, and about 200 joining online. 12

A late January 2024 rally in front of the Heritage Foundation headquarters near Capitol Hill marked the formal launch of the Stop the Coup 2025 group. 13

One of the speakers at the protest event said of Project 2025 supporters, “We need to go find out where they live, where they go to church, who they hang around with, and bird dog they asses.” 14

Also at the protest, Markus Batchelor, national political director of People for the American Way, told the crowd that “Jan. 6 was just a dress rehearsal.” He said coups “don’t need weapons to succeed,” and that “coups can be committed by pen and paper.” He further said, “coups can be committed at the ballot,” and “coups can be committed by seemingly democratic processes.” 15
