Mousawat Organization (not to be confused with the Mousawat Rehabilitation Centre) is a Lebanese non-religious and non-political non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to advancing women’s rights in Lebanon since 2007. 1

As of November 2023, the organization’s websites, mousawat.net and mousawat-lb.org, are defunct. 2 3

Activity

In 2022, Mousawat Organization signed a proclamation by Lebanon’s Feminist Civil Society Platform demanding that Lebanese candidates take a series of pledges for the 2022 election. The pledges included not promoting “patriarchy or misogyny,” including a “gender perspective” in all future legislation and budgets, adopting a unified civil code that applies to women and men, and supporting specific legislative bills to end child marriage and criminalize marital rape. 4

Mousawat hosts seminars to raise awareness of sexual harassment. Two seminars were held in Tripoli in November 2021. 5

Mousawat has encouraged men and boys in the Lebanese city of Tripoli to take a larger role in household work traditionally done by women. 6  Mousawat has encouraged drug awareness in Tripoli. 7 Mousawat has produced research indicating that 75 percent of Tripoli residents do not know the definition of “sexual harassment.” 8

In 2011, Mousawat signed a declaration by the LFCSP calling for easier access for women in elections, campaign finance reforms, and other legal and civil reforms. 9

Partnerships

Mousawat Organization works with the Associacio Catalunya-Liban, a Catalan feminist group. 10

In 2021, Mousawat partnered with the Religion and Security Council for a campaign against sexual harassment, cyberbullying, and to promote self-defense among Lebanese women. 11
