Transgender Research Publishing

Karger Publishers has published several papers supporting left-of-center positions regarding the concept of gender dysphoria 16 and transgender medical care for young people. 17 18 These publications have addressed issues including antiandrogen therapies, menstrual suppression, puberty blockers, and others. 19

Karger Publishers’ publications have said that it is important to “affirm” transgender individuals, including in the use of pronouns. It supports the use of new identities throughout what it calls social transition, including the use of names and pronouns aligned with an individual’s presumed gender identity. This research claimed that only using a transgender youth’s chosen name improves their mental health and lowers rates of depression and other mental issues. Despite these claims, the research acknowledged that surveys of transgendered adults did not find associations between early social transition and improved mental health outcomes. 20

The same paper suggested the creation of hormone analogs to prevent progression of puberty in an effort to “assuage the gender dysphoria that escalates with the onset of puberty” to prevent the need for sex change surgeries. This paper suggests that by arresting breast development early in life, a mastectomy would not be needed for a biological woman who attempted to become a man. It also assesses the long-term effects of puberty blockers and treatment. However, these publications do acknowledge that sex-change surgery can lead to subfertility and/or infertility. 21

Karger-published research has suggested that clinical medical staff should use a patient’s preferred name and pronouns, should ensure medical documents and other medical records document a patient’s preferred names, and that health care clinicians should encourage what it considers the proper use of names and pronouns by a transgendered individual’s family and community. 22

Karger Publishers has published research on transgender issues that was written by at least one author who received a grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and another grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). 23
