International Degrowth Network (IDN) is an environmentalist organization that advocates for “degrowth,” or intentionally deindustrializing society in order to prevent climate change. 1 The group also advocates for the “Global South” to use “anti-colonial” and “anti-imperial” efforts to “liberate” itself “from the Global North’s imperial dynamics.” 2
The network claims to be comprised of more than 40 organizations and more than 4,000 individuals, advertising that any who support the “degrowth” movement should join the IDN. 3
Background
The International Degrowth Network (IDN) claims to be comprised of over 40 organizations and more than 4,000 individuals, advertising that any who support the “degrowth” movement should join the IDN. 4 “Degrowth” is the principle that society must intentionally deindustrialize to prevent climate change. 5
Activities
The International Degrowth Network (IDN) advocates for “degrowth,” or intentionally deindustrializing society to prevent climate change. IDN further claims it seeks to provide “international cooperation between degrowth affiliated groups” so that they might “build on each other’s success.” 6
It also advocates for “radical inclusivity” and “active resistance to systems of domination,” while calling for “the Global South” to use “anti-colonial and anti-imperial” actions to liberate itself from the “Global North’s Imperial Tactics.” 7 The network also claims the “degrowth movement” must make alliances with developing countries as well as “labor, environmental, feminist, queer and decolonial movements.” 8
IDN claims it is organized through a set of “circles” in its network, grouping its members based on location, internal functioning, theme, and strategy. 9 In addition, the group claims each circle is subjected to “continuous evolution,” or changes to the order based on continuous feedback and communication. 10
