The Future of Tourism Coalition is a collection of left-leaning organizations that advocate against what they view as unsustainable tourism. Among other things, the coalition expresses concerns about the effects of tourism on the environment, the environmental impacts of certain popular tourist destinations, the demographics of both tourists and those engaged in planning for tourism, the profits from tourism, the use of plastics by tourism businesses, and sprawl associated with resort destinations. 1

Since its launch, the coalition’s views have found new audiences, including at the United Nation’s 2021 Climate Change Conference. 2 The United Nations World Tourism Organization and the World Tourism and Travel Council have indicated their agreement with the principles embraced by the coalition. 3 Hundreds of government entities, businesses, nongovernmental organizations, and academic institutions have added themselves as signatories to the guiding principles of the Future of Tourism Coalition. 4

Background

The coalition includes six founding members: The Center for Responsible Travel, the Destination Stewardship Center, Green Destinations, Sustainable Travel International, Tourism Cares, and the Travel Foundation. 5 It was founded in 2020 amid a sharp worldwide decline in tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic. 6 One member of the coalition lamented the “unfettered growth in travel” in the decades before the pandemic, when, because of robust economic growth, tourism had become more accessible to the non-wealthy, and called for a “re-centering” of tourism in the aftermath of the pandemic. 7

Jeremy Sampson, CEO of the Travel Foundation and a co-author of the Glasgow Declaration that calls for net zero carbon emissions before 2050, is chairman of the coalition. 8
