The Florida Women’s Funding Alliance (FWFA) is a left-of-center program operated by the Women’s Foundation of Florida, a small left-of-center foundation in West Palm Beach, Florida, that funds advocacy groups and gender issues in Florida.

FWFA was founded as a research arm to commission studies promoting women’s issues. The group commissioned six studies and reports between 2016 and 2021 on topics including income, health care, education, and domestic violence. Funders of the group that have assisted the organization in commissioning studies include the Jewish Women’s Foundation of the Greater Palm Beaches (JWF), the Women’s Giving Alliance of Northeast Florida, the Community Foundation of Northeast Florida, the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center, and the Florida Philanthropic Network. 1

Background

The Florida Women’s Funding Alliance was founded by the Women’s Foundation of Florida in 2016 with the aim of providing advocacy support to women’s issues in Florida. The Women’s Foundation of Florida is a small group founded in 2007 to promote women’s rights and other gender issues in the state. The foundation was initially the Women’s Foundation of Palm Beach County before changing its name to the Women’s Foundation of Florida in 2017. The group is affiliated with the Women’s Funding Network. 2

The Women’s Foundation of Florida and the Florida Women’s Funding Alliance support pro-abortion policies and decried the overturning of Roe v. Wade using far-left language, stating that “we know that abortion bans disproportionately harm Black, Latino, Indigenous, and other people of color because of this country’s legacy of racism and discrimination.” 3

Research

The Florida Women’s Funding Alliance published a report in 2021 that stated, “Prioritizing Girls in Florida is the Focus of 2021 FWFA Report” which addressed juvenile justice issues in relation to girls in Florida and called for “campaigning for school-based mental health services, and placing girl advocates in schools.” 4

A 2019 report from the FWFA titled “Status of Girls Well-Being in Florida” stated that the report “uncovered significant rates of violence and victimization among certain segments of girls in their communities, particularly girls of color and those identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or unsure. Girls living in rural areas also experienced more reports of bullying, less access to a safe parent or teacher, and an increased frequency of below average or failing grades.” The report also stated, “One in 10 girls report having been raped.” 5

A 2018 report from FWFA was titled “The Status of Women in Florida by County: Health & Well-Being” found that “women in Florida have higher rates of AIDS and diabetes, slightly more days per month of poor mental health, and lower access to health insurance coverage than women in the United States overall.” The report called for mandated paid family leave and sick leave policies to be implemented in the state. 6

The first report published by FWFA was titled “The Status of Women in Florida by County: Poverty & Opportunity” which at that point identified the FWFA as an affinity group of the Florida Philanthropy Network. The group states that the report is a part of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research’s long-standing report series, The Status of Women in the States, which has continually collected data on women’s issues since 1996. 7
