    Activities

Democracy and Polarization Lab (DPL) is a political research organization housed at Stanford University that researches strategies on reducing “polarization” in the American electoral system. It also studies disinformation, election security, and “democratic accountability.” Its provides training to graduate students studying about electoral research methods. 1

DPL seeks to “improve the information environment” and “maintain the integrity of the electoral process.” To offer solutions to these alleged challenges, DPL gathers and analyzes data on voters and politicians from governments, election offices, and social media to “study the causal factors that improve or hamper the democratic process.” 1

As of 2025, the most up-to-date published research paper from DPL was from 2022. A significant portion of its research has gone to studying claims of voter fraud during the 2020 U.S. presidential election.  2 3

    Affiliations

As of 2025, the Democracy and Polarization Lab was listed as an official affiliate of MIT Election Data and Science Lab (MEDSL), an election and polling statistics center housed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It purports to apply “scientific principles” in studying how elections are administered in the United States, and aims to “improve the democratic experience” for American voters. MEDSL’s research areas focus on subjects such as “mail-in balloting,” “same-day registration,” and “redistricting.”4 5

    Leadership

As of 2025, Democracy and Polarization Lab is led by co-directors Justin Grimmer and Andrew B. Hall, both of whom are professors of political science at Standford University. 1

Grimmer’s published articles include “No Evidence for Voter Fraud: A Guide to Statistical Claims about the 2020 Election,” “Who Put Trump in the White House? Explaining the Contribution of Voting Blocs to Trump’s Victory,” “A Woman’s Voice in the House: Gender Composition and its Consequences in Committee Hearings,” and “Obstacles to Estimating Voter ID Laws’ Effect on Turnout.” 6

As of 2025, Hall was a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. His research revolves around improving “systems of democratic governance” as well as for “governance systems” of online communities “including social media and blockchain governance.” His published research papers, often co-authored with other academics and researchers, have covered topics such as political extremism, voter turnout, vote-by-mail, corporate campaign contribution restrictions, and “how high-income area[s] receive more service from municipal government.” 7
